The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) has officially endorsed the new Multidisciplinary Intercollegiate Green Theatre Checklist v2, an initiative aimed at minimising environmental impacts within healthcare settings. This checklist offers a comprehensive approach to making operating theatres more eco-friendly by optimising energy use, reducing waste, and encouraging sustainable practices throughout the perioperative process.
The official launch of the Checklist will take place with a webinar on 19th February, 7 – 8pm.
The intercollegiate sustainability in surgery groups is proud to present version two of the Green Theatre Checklist and Compendium. This updated version has been reviewed in collaboration with the Association of Anaesthetists and Royal College of Anaesthetists and is also endorsed by AfPP.
The launch will commence with a talk by Professor Hugh Montgomery, co-chair of the Lancet Countdown on Health & Climate Change, to remind us of the crisis we are all facing and the importance of acting now. This will be followed by a brief presentation of the new Checklist and highlights of the updated recommendations by the lead author Miss Jasmine Winter Beatty and the anaesthetic advisor Dr Cliff Shelton. A panel discussion between all sustainability representatives of the involved bodies, including Jennifer Maher, AfPP’s Education Lead, will follow focussing on implementation strategies and tools including the new eQUIP series.
The launch webinar will:
• Update on the state of the climate and planetary health crises and urgent need for action.
• What surgical teams can and must do to tackle the challenge and minimise their own contributions to the destruction of our environment and the consequent repercussions on human health.
By the end of this launch webinar, participants should be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge on the climate and planetary crisis and its impacts on human health and the continuity of our species.
• Understand how the Green Theatre Checklist can be used in everyday practice to minimise the contributions of surgical care towards the crisis.
Alex Duke, CEO of AfPP, commented on AfPP’s endorsement of the Checklist: “We are proud to support the Multidisciplinary Intercollegiate Green Theatre Checklist v2 as it aligns with our commitment to improving patient care and fostering innovation in the perioperative field. Sustainability is an essential aspect of modern healthcare, and by integrating green practices into operating theatres, we not only reduce our environmental footprint but also set an example for the healthcare industry as a whole. The checklist empowers multidisciplinary teams to work together toward a more sustainable future, and we’re excited to be part of this important initiative.”
