“Free student membership will benefit all ODP and theatre nurse students” – says Bethany
Bethany Imms, the newly-appointed Student Representative at The Association for Perioperative Practice, says the launch of free student membership will make a significant positive impact on student training and overall practice.
“I think free student membership is one of the best things that AfPP has introduced,” said Bethany, an Operating Department Practitioner working on anaesthetics and recovery at The Walton Centre, a major neurology hospital in Liverpool.
“This will benefit every student as money struggles is a big part of student life. Having this organisation that offers webinars, journals, support, and a voice for students for free is just fabulous.
“I was introduced to AfPP, the leading UK organisation for theatre practitioners, whilst I was training and found it very useful to expand my knowledge. To have an organisation which offers so many tools to benefit my practice helped me to become the best practitioner I can be.”

AfPP offers so much material to refer to and to gain knowledge from which will benefit your personal practice massively. It allows you to network with people from different work backgrounds and expertise. It offers you support and a voice in a profession that can be overwhelming and constantly evolving.
This is a fabulous offer for students to become part of AfPP while studying and be supported to become the best perioperative practitioner they can be, with all the member benefits available to them.

Free Student Places
As part of our commitment to students we’ve introduced the award of a number of free student places at some of our events. Nominations for these places, announced throughout the year, are via your university and are open to all final year students working in the perioperative environment.
AfPP will ask the winning students to submit a report which may be included in our Innovation, People and Products (IPP) magazine.
Keep an eye out for the announcements in AfPP communications and on our socials: @SaferSurgeryUK
AfPP’s ‘Go To’ Books for Students
We offer a range of publications, some with particular appeal for students.
Sharing Knowledge in the Perioperative Environment is one of AfPP’s ‘go to’ books for students, their mentors and newly qualified perioperative practitioners. It aims to provide you with practical information, guidance and advice.
It also offers insight into the tools and support available to those undergoing learning and those supporting students.
Another is Theatre Etiquette: A Guide to Theatres, a must for all healthcare professionals working in a perioperative environment.
Just for Students
As well as qualifying for all our benefits, as a student you can attend as many of our webinars as you wish for FREE.
I’ve attended several London study days and they’ve been brilliant for networking with other ODPs as well as fellow perioperative professionals from various Trusts. They’re great for keeping up to date with evidence-based practice as well as obtaining CPD hours.
Being a member of AfPP has had such a positive impact on my education and has helped me network with students and practitioners all over the UK.
AfPP is so beneficial to students because they gain access to a variety of useful research as well as receiving the monthly journals. I think it’s fabulous how they provide brilliant education events throughout the year which are totally free to students!
