Amina Pernarh, the newly appointed Regional Lead for London for The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP), is looking forward to collaborating with perioperative practitioners throughout the UK.

“I am delighted to be appointed the AfPP Regional Lead for London and the opportunity it presents for me to share knowledge and ideas, standardise practice, and facilitate and promote safer surgery,” said Amina.

“I am looking forward to networking with other AfPP Regional Leads and members to bring about positive changes within the perioperative environment,” added Amina, who works as a Practice Educator within the Practice Development Team at King’s College Hospital in London, a major teaching hospital and trauma centre.

Amina, who worked as an Operating Department Practitioner, specialising in anaesthetics, for many years before moving into an education role, and has worked at several London hospitals, including Chealse and Westminster, St Thomas’, and The Royal London, has been a member of AfPP for much of her career.

“AfPP has helped me so much during my career, especially the network it has created for me and the CPD hours it has helped me get.

“I attended my first AfPP conference this year, at the University of Warwick, and it really opened my eyes to all the great opportunities that AfPP offers to theatre practitioners,” said Amina.

“The “Civility Saves Lives” theme through the conference really resonated with me, and I am definitely using the learnings to teach others about the impact civility can have in the hospital theatre environment and life, and the better outcomes that can be achieved if we all treat others as we would like to be treated.”

Amina is keen to promote the National Safety Standards for Invasive Procedures (NatSSIPS) through her role with AfPP and says there are some prominent issues to tackle for the perioperative sector, including staffing shortages, heavy workloads, and sickness levels.

“I feel education and training are key to moving perioperative care forward, and my role as a Regional Lead for AfPP will help me to promote and discuss this more widely.”
